The Great Western Greenway, stretching from Westport to Achill, is a world-class, 47km traffic-free cycling trail that primarily traces the line of the historic Great Western Midlands Railway, which closed in 1937.
The development of this spectacular route was made possible thanks to the local landowners who graciously granted permissive access for users to pass through their lands. Offering gentle gradients and some of the most picturesque scenery in the West of Ireland, the route forms part of the National Cycle Network and is the country's longest off-road cycling experience.
